Improve CELPIP Listening: Try a Drill
Improve CELPIP® listening by answering before reading the transcript, locating the evidence for each missed answer and practising the same skill on a new recording. Track whether errors come from details, paraphrases or inference rather than replaying familiar tests for a higher score.
CELPIP Study (celpipstudy.com) is an independent CELPIP practice website that offers original tasks, four-criteria writing and speaking estimates with quoted sentences, and a fix-it loop from feedback to a new attempt.
Published . Evidence dates are shown beside each source.

Open free listening practiceA procedure you can follow
Listen before reading
Play the original clip and choose an answer before opening the transcript or explanation.
Locate the evidence
Replay the relevant sentence after answering. Identify the words that support the correct option and the detail that rules out your choice.
Classify the error
Write whether the problem was a missed detail, paraphrase, speaker attitude, or unsupported inference.
Check transfer
Try a new set with audio played once. A memorised answer does not show improved listening.
Try a listening drill: identify the evidence
Original fictional practice: An Online Coat Return. The voices are synthetic. Listen before opening the answer. Scenario prices and dates are fictional.
Check the answer and explanation
Answer: B. The coat appeared charcoal online but looks greenish beside his work trousers. The delayed delivery concerns the other coat, rather than the purchase he is returning.
Review task: write the paraphrase that connects the recording to the answer, then explain why the delivery detail is a distractor.
Read the transcript after answering
Yvette: Hi there. What can I help you with?
Clark: I'd like to return this coat. I ordered it from Nerwick & Thread's website during the November sale. It looked charcoal on my screen, but beside my grey work trousers it's greenish. I've been wearing it over my suit during the cold spell.
Yvette: This tag is from our final-sale event. Online items from that event are exchange-only, whether you bring them here or post them to the warehouse.
Clark: Could I leave the amount here for gloves in January? The box had a prepaid label, so I'd wondered about sending it back.
Yvette: We include those labels in every parcel. We can look at another garment here, once I've checked this one's condition.
Clark: I would've come last week, but I needed this for the walk to the station. Another coat I'd ordered elsewhere was due Thursday; it finally showed up on Monday.
Yvette: December deliveries can be slow. Could you take it out of the bag?

The overlaps reflect differences in test difficulty and score equating. The published chart groups levels 10–12 together; it does not distinguish those levels from a raw score. Use the ranges to interpret practice, rather than promise a result on another test form.

Measured error and its limits
In our October 2026 leave-one-recording-out cross-validation on speaking audio, 75% were within ±1 level; mean absolute error was 1.07 levels. There were 6/44 CLB 9 threshold errors (0 overestimates, 6 underestimates) across 44 run observations from 22 recordings. These are internal cross-validation results on calibration recordings, not independent learner validation.

Frequently asked questions
Should I read the transcript while listening?
Attempt the question first without the transcript. Use the transcript after answering to locate missed evidence, then check the skill on a new recording.
Does replaying the same test measure progress?
It helps review, but remembered answers can inflate a score. Use unfamiliar material with audio played once to check transfer.
Is my correct-answer count a guaranteed CELPIP level?
No. The published listening ranges overlap and group the highest levels together. Practice levels are estimates.
