1. Why does the man want to return his purchase?
Hear this question

Answer and explanation

B. The shade disappoints him beside his everyday work clothing. The coat appeared charcoal online but looks greenish beside his work trousers. The delayed delivery concerns the other coat, rather than the purchase he is returning.

2. What does the initial return policy permit the man?
Hear this question

Answer and explanation

C. Select a substitute garment at the same branch. The woman applies the exchange-only rule to these online purchases and offers to find another garment locally. The prepaid label does not provide access to a refund through the warehouse.

3. Why did the man postpone his visit to the store?
Hear this question

Answer and explanation

D. A delivery delay extended his need for the coat. He needed the coat for his station walks, and its replacement arrived several days later than expected. His January plans concern buying gloves, rather than timing this visit.

4. What does the woman discover when she examines the coat?
Hear this question

Answer and explanation

B. A fastening was attached incorrectly during the production process. She identifies incorrect stitching placement that interferes with the zipper. The man suspected his suit had caught, but her inspection reveals a construction problem.

5. Which additional remedy does the woman say is available?
Hear this question

Answer and explanation

D. Repayment of the amount originally charged for the online purchase. The manufacturing fault creates an exception to the earlier exchange-only restriction and permits a full return. The repair service handles damage arising after purchase, which is a different situation.

6. How does the man regard the suggested replacement now?
Hear this question

Answer and explanation

C. It would duplicate a purchase he has already received. He contrasts his earlier willingness to exchange with the arrival of the other coat, showing that his need has already been met. He would previously have accepted the extra charge, so price is not his stated objection.

7. How much purchasing value would the store-credit option give the man?
Hear this question

Answer and explanation

A. A shopping balance of $166. The credit combines his $156 payment with the $10 bonus. Adding the bonus to $260 would incorrectly use the original price rather than his actual expenditure.

8. What will the man most likely do next?
Hear this question

Answer and explanation

A. Retrieve his phone elsewhere in the shopping centre. His saved email would support his preferred refund, and he has ten minutes to collect the phone while the clothing store stays open later. Requesting another confirmation would introduce a two-business-day delay.

Segment 1

Yvette: Hi there. What can I help you with?

Clark: I'd like to return this coat. I ordered it from Nerwick & Thread's website during the November sale. It looked charcoal on my screen, but beside my grey work trousers it's greenish. I've been wearing it over my suit during the cold spell.

Yvette: This tag is from our final-sale event. Online items from that event are exchange-only, whether you bring them here or post them to the warehouse.

Clark: Could I leave the amount here for gloves in January? The box had a prepaid label, so I'd wondered about sending it back.

Yvette: We include those labels in every parcel. We can look at another garment here, once I've checked this one's condition.

Clark: I would've come last week, but I needed this for the walk to the station. Another coat I'd ordered elsewhere was due Thursday; it finally showed up on Monday.

Yvette: December deliveries can be slow. Could you take it out of the bag?

Segment 2

Yvette: Could you fasten it for me? I'd like to check the condition.

Clark: It caught once at the station. I assumed the edge of my suit jacket had got in the way.

Yvette: Let me put it flat on the counter. The lining's clear, but look: halfway up, the zipper teeth separate. This strip was sewn too close to the teeth. That's a manufacturing fault.

Clark: Would it go through your repair service, then?

Yvette: That's for damage that happens after purchase. A fault like this qualifies for a full return. I could also get you the black version from downstairs, although that one would cost $20 extra.

Clark: I'd have paid that when this first arrived. But the coat I ordered elsewhere is hanging by my door now. I'd rather get the money available again.

Yvette: All right. I'll need to check your paperwork. Have you still got the packing slip?

Clark: Yes, and the prepaid label. I kept everything in the box.

Segment 3

Yvette: Your original price was $260; the sale charge was $156. For a refund to the card you used, I'll need the order email with its payment reference.

Clark: I've brought the card and packing slip. The email's saved on my phone, which I left charging at the repair kiosk near the entrance.

Yvette: The slip is enough for store credit. If you choose that, we add $10 to the amount you actually paid. To have the email sent again, you can contact customer support; that takes two business days.

Clark: The kiosk closes at 6. It's ten to now, isn't it? I don't start work until 7, but home is forty minutes from here.

Yvette: Yes, 5:50. We're here until 9, and I can leave your return open. Take the coat and slip with you; we need to have everything together when the transaction is completed.

Clark: Okay, thanks. That gives me some breathing room.

You recently moved out of a rented apartment in Airdrie, and your landlord, Stefan, has emailed a proposed $180 deposit deduction for repainting scuffed hallway walls. Write an email to your former landlord, Stefan.

  • Challenge the proposed deduction using your move-in evidence.
  • Explain why you need the deposit returned promptly.

Compare the original estimated level-9 model

Dear Stefan,

I am writing to dispute the proposed $180 deduction for repainting the hallway of the Airdrie apartment I recently vacated. The scuff marks were present when I moved in, as recorded in our signed move-in report. My dated photographs also show those same marks.

You have requested my approval by Friday. However, I need the full deposit for my new apartment before Monday, so both the deduction and uncertainty about repayment create a practical problem. Without confirmation of the amount and transfer date, I cannot confidently arrange the payment for my new home.

Please review the signed report alongside my photographs and reconsider the painting charge. I can forward the images for comparison so we can clear this up promptly. Once you have completed the review, please confirm that the deduction will be removed and specify when the full deposit will be returned. This would help me plan the payment.

I would appreciate a written response before Friday so that we can resolve the issue and complete the move-out arrangements before the weekend.

Sincerely,

Fiona
