Practice question
You are at a small café in Grande Prairie and see an unusual tea-serving object. Call your cousin Joaquín, who enjoys trying new ways to brew tea and lives a fifteen-minute walk from the café. A demonstration starts in twenty minutes. Describe the object in detail in your own words and ask whether Joaquín can meet you there in time.

Level 7 sample answer
121 words
Hi Joaquín, I'm at a small café in Grande Prairie, and there's something you might enjoy seeing. It look like a teapot on a swing. A blue base shaped like a crescent holds a copper arch. A round white teapot hangs inside it on a copper bar. The pot is about 15 centimetres across. It has a blue spout pointing down on the left and a blue handle on the right. There's also a blue lid with a copper knob. A clear glass cup is fixed below the spout. Um, I think you tilt the pot to pour tea. Can you get here in time for demonstration? It starts in twenty minutes, and your walk takes fifteen. Let me know. Bye!
Why this answer is at level 7
This level 7 example gives Joaquín a recognizable picture of the object and a clear invitation. Compared with level 9, its description relies more on separate statements, uses less precise mechanical vocabulary, and contains grammar slips that interrupt otherwise understandable phrasing.
A clear glass cup is fixed below the spout.
— Content/Coherence: This gives a useful spatial relationship, helping Joaquín picture where the tea goes. However, the description mostly lists parts separately; a higher-level answer would connect the spout, cup, and tilting mechanism more explicitly.A round white teapot hangs inside it on a copper bar.
— Vocabulary: The familiar words communicate shape, colour, and position clearly. Compared with the higher-level answers, however, 'round' and 'bar' are less precise than 'spherical' and 'axle' for explaining this unusual suspended teapot. It look like a teapot on a swing.
— Listenability: The swing comparison is easy to picture and provides a helpful starting point. The verb agreement error disrupts the phrasing slightly; a higher-level answer would preserve that accessibility while using consistently controlled grammar. Can you get here in time for demonstration?
— Task Fulfillment: The speaker directly asks whether Joaquín can arrive for the demonstration, fulfilling the central invitation. A higher-level answer would phrase the question more naturally and explicitly explain the narrow margin between his walk and the start.
Level 9 sample answer
152 words
Hey Joaquín, I'm at a café in Grande Prairie, looking at a tea-serving gadget that's right up your alley. Imagine a cobalt-blue crescent base with a copper arch joining its two ends. The arch reaches 45 centimetres high. Suspended inside is a white spherical teapot, about 15 centimetres across, held on a horizontal copper axle. Its blue spout curves down to the left, directly above a clear glass cup fixed to the base. On the other side, there's a blue loop handle. The lid is blue too, with a small copper knob. I imagine you use the handle to tilt the teapot around the axle, rather like tipping a little swing. I'm curious whether that makes pouring easier. They're demonstrating it in twenty minutes. Since you're a fifteen-minute walk away, you'd have a five-minute cushion if you left now. Can you meet me here in time? Give me a call back. Bye!
Why this answer is at level 9
This level 9 example combines precise description, a friendly conversational tone, and a practical explanation of Joaquín's arrival time. Compared with level 11, it gives less detail about how the axle supports the pot and explains the pouring action somewhat less directly.
Its blue spout curves down to the left, directly above a clear glass cup fixed to the base.
— Content/Coherence: This connects several parts through clear spatial relationships, improving on the more separate statements in level 7. The top example extends that structural clarity by explaining that the axle supports the teapot on either side.looking at a tea-serving gadget that's right up your alley.
— Vocabulary: The informal noun and idiom suit a call to a cousin and connect the discovery to his interests. The top example adds a more distinctive overall visual comparison while maintaining precise vocabulary for the individual parts.I imagine you use the handle to tilt the teapot around the axle, rather like tipping a little swing.
— Listenability: The familiar comparison makes the proposed movement easy to follow, and 'I imagine' appropriately signals uncertainty. The top answer explains the action and its practical result more directly, without adding another comparison.you'd have a five-minute cushion if you left now.
— Task Fulfillment: This turns the walking and demonstration times into actionable advice, developing the invitation beyond level 7. The top example makes the urgency more concrete by explaining that this margin must also cover getting organized.
Level 11 sample answer
175 words
Joaquín, I've found something at a café in Grande Prairie that I think you'd enjoy: a tea-serving device resembling a miniature suspended globe. A cobalt-blue crescent forms the base, 30 centimetres wide, and a copper arch rises from its two ends to a height of 45 centimetres. Within that arch hangs a spherical white ceramic teapot, supported on either side by a horizontal copper axle. The pot itself is 15 centimetres across. Its short blue spout curves downward to the left, above a transparent glass cup fixed to the base. A cobalt-blue loop handle projects from the opposite side, while a circular blue lid, topped with a copper knob, completes it. Presumably, the axle lets you tilt the pot using the handle, directing tea into the cup without lifting the pot off its support. There's a demonstration in twenty minutes, which leaves you only five minutes to get organized before your fifteen-minute walk. Could you make it here in time? I'd enjoy seeing whether it works as elegantly as it looks. Let me know. Bye.
Why this answer is at level 11
This level 11 example builds a detailed, connected picture of the device and clearly explains its likely operation. Precise vocabulary, controlled sentence structure, and a tactful but urgent invitation make the description useful and engaging for Joaquín.
Within that arch hangs a spherical white ceramic teapot, supported on either side by a horizontal copper axle.
— Content/Coherence: The sentence moves naturally from the arch to the suspended pot and then its support. Explaining support on either side makes the construction clearer than in the other examples and prepares the listener for the tilting explanation.a tea-serving device resembling a miniature suspended globe.
— Vocabulary: This compact comparison supplies an overall image before the detailed description begins. 'Suspended globe' captures both the rounded shape and hanging position, making the vocabulary precise and useful for describing this unusual object.Presumably, the axle lets you tilt the pot using the handle, directing tea into the cup without lifting the pot off its support.
— Listenability: The sentence connects the mechanism, the user's action, and the pouring result in a continuous explanation. 'Presumably' makes the inference clear, while the concrete actions help Joaquín follow the longer sentence.which leaves you only five minutes to get organized before your fifteen-minute walk.
— Task Fulfillment: This explains exactly why Joaquín needs to act promptly. Together with the following invitation and the speaker's interest in watching the device work, it gives him a practical deadline and a personal reason to join.
What moves an answer from 7 to 9 to 11
These are model answers written to show each level. The labels are practice estimates, not examiner scores.
Help the listener picture the unusual object through its shape, material, size and arrangement. Use comparisons and spatial language, then complete the requested interaction.
- Content/Coherence: Level 7 models communicate the main ideas; level 9 models develop relevant details with clear connections; level 11 models sustain precise, well-integrated development.
- Vocabulary: Compare adequate everyday wording with more varied, accurate choices at level 9 and flexible, precise expression at level 11.
- Listenability: Higher-level delivery needs clear pronunciation, rhythm, intonation and controlled pauses. Transcripts suggest phrasing and organisation, but cannot demonstrate these audio features; a recording is needed.
- Task Fulfillment: Compare how fully the response addresses the request, develops enough relevant detail and maintains an appropriate tone for the audience within the task limits.
Assess the criteria together. A longer answer or rarer words alone do not establish a higher level.
